an announcement and some nursery ideas

 It's official...

We are having another boy!

Look at that cute little guy!

I had been crossing my fingers and thinking pink, since we already have a boy... but I'm so excited that my little man is going to have a baby brother! I guess then I won't have a little man anymore, but little men. Maybe I need a new nickname.

Already I'm starting to map out in my head what I want to do with the nursery... although since we only have a 2 bedroom place, that means Matthew and the littlest Burnsy will be sharing a room. I keep hearing people say how convenient it is because I don't have to change the theme or decor. Riiight... like I'm going to pass up an excuse to redecorate. Since I've become more than slightly addicted to Pinterest (the fact that they came out with an iPhone app is both a blessing and a curse), I have of course been pinning nursery ideas. Here are a few of my favorites, although in terms of theme I'm thinking maybe animals or the ABC's - both favorites of Matthew's.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Maybe I should be putting more effort into what little Burnsy's name will be rather than what his bedroom will look like... except I have absolutely no idea what to do about a name. None. The two names we liked the best before - Matthew & Thomas - ended up as Matthew Thomas Burns. Any other names we've ever talking about using... they suddenly just don't feel like they fit this little guy. I really need to start going through that baby name book, we may have 4 months left but 4 months goes by awfully fast in this house! Matthew has been quite helpful - first his name was going to be "Buzz Cake Burns", then it was "Lightening McQueen Burns" (shocker), and then this afternoon he decided on "Silly Pants Burns" but then quickly changed his mind and said that "Matthew Burns" was a good name. I told him that was taken, but he doesn't seem to mind. Apparently in this one thing he is willing to share.

Well, we will figure something out eventually... possibly without Matthew's input.

The tale of two windows

Way back in August of last year (yikes, a whole year ago!?) I started taking about wanting to give my master bedroom a makeover. We didn't have money for me to take on any new projects until October, at which point I posted that I had started painting and working on curtains. Well believe it or not (after all, its only been a year), I've actually made progress (well, a little...)!

I did finish painting, and I can't tell you how happy that makes me! I actually enjoy painting. However, painting was just the first step before doing everything else I was wanting to do... so I was anxious to get it out of the way so I could move on. It's {long ago} done though, which means on to bigger and better things!

The next thing I wanted to tackle was our window situation... we have these two big windows that butt up against each other in the corner, and I've just never known what to do with them. At one time I attempted making a roman shade (not bad for my first attempt) but it just didn't look the way I had hoped, so I never made the other. We then just hung up a dark curtain over the other to block out light, and left it at that. (You can see the "before" photo was an afterthought... seeing as half the walls are already painted in this picture!)

Beautiful, right?
I know you're jealous.

These windows are so awkward! I love the idea of something open to let natural light in, but the reality of living in a condo: our bedroom window looks out on our neighbors front door. Talk about awkward! So we never leave our shades or blinds open, because that is just too weird for us. I'm not exactly a private person most of the time, but I don't really need complete strangers looking in on the bedroom I share with my husband.

I envisioned frosting the windows somehow... but I was having trouble finding a good way to do that so that it would neither look tacky, nor be anywhere in the realm of expensive. It took some time but I finally settled on frosted contact paper. I didn't know how well it would do, but it was only about $7.00 to do the windows, so I considered it worth a try. There's a slight pattern/texture to it, but in person you really don't notice it.

I very meticulously cleaned each window pane and wiped it down with a lint free cloth, and then I just lined up the contact paper making sure there was some overlap anywhere it met the frame of the window. After that I carefully used a box cutter to trim exactly along the edge of the window frame. As I wanted this to be as permanent as possible, and since our windows are old and needed to be resealed from the wet Washington weather, I then used clear caulking all around the edge to seal it in place. It takes time and patience to make sure everything is lined up and that there are no air bubbles... but it was so worth it!

After that it was just a matter of putting together the things I've been collecting over the last year or so. My thoughts were to turn this into a little reading corner but now that I'm pregnant, expect it will be more of a rocking/nursing corner.

When I changed Matthew's nursery into a toddler bedroom, I moved the rocking chair into the corner. That's right, that big comfy chair is a rocker! It was my one big purchase that I really wanted when I was pregnant last time... and thank you to my Grandma for giving it to me! It has been used endlessly, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!

I also had this lovely chandelier waiting to be hung, it was a birthday gift last December from my mother-in-law Kathy. Isn't it pretty? Just what this room needed (although my husband might disagree, but he eventually gave in and let me have a pretty light).

It lets off such gorgeous shadows when turned on, I love it!

And here is the (nearly) finished corner of our bedroom...

A far cry from where it started, am I right? You can see I'm in the middle of something with the curtains, but that is a post for another day (mostly because it's not finished yet...). The frosted windows have been amazing. SO glad I did it! I finished them about 6 months ago, and they have held up beautifully - especially considering the wet months we've been having this year. I love waking up in the morning with the soft light coming in through the windows... no more cave for us!

That brings you nearly up to speed as to what's been going on with my little master bedroom makeover, I lost my job a while back and so my very tiny budget for projects went down to nothing. I'm happy to say though that I'm working again... between that and being out of the first trimester (the doggedly tired trimester) of my pregnancy, I'm started to get back to doing things. I've got finished curtains and a new headboard in my sights... hopefully there will be a post on those soon, and by soon I don't mean next summer!

an exciting announcement

I have - yet again - disappeared! I took a break from this blog to focus on my new food blog: Killer Zebras. As it turns out though, I've had to take a break from that one as well. My energy was just completely zapped thanks to this:

That's right, baby number two is on the way!

Around Christmas time (I'm due December 28th) I'll have another one of these around...

That's my little Matthew Man at about 5 days old. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't ready to hold another one of those in my arms!

So my absense around here first started when Aaron and I were thinking it would be a good time to look at selling our small home and buying a bigger house. After all, housing prices are so low that we can actually afford the size house we need! I stopped working around projects around the house because in my head I was putting in a lot of effort that we really wouldn't be hanging around to enjoy... and then... 3 forclosures in our neighborhood! Yikes. Within 6 months the value of our home dropped to a point where it just isn't realistic to sell anymore. Thanks to this, we've changed our minds and are not moving anywhere! Probably for a few years at least.

Maybe it's early nesting or something, but if I'm going to have to live in our home for at least a few more years, I'm going to make it a home I want to live in. Plus I've come to the realization that we are going to be squeezing 4 people and a dog into our tiny living space. This means 3 things:

1: We need to get rid of soooo much junk
2: I can't have any half finished projects sitting around waiting to be done (because with a toddler and a baby, they might never get done)
3: If we are going to be that cramped, then our house needs to be as completely organized as it can possibly be... otherwise we will be constantly reminded of the fact that we are bursting at the seams!

So those are my three goals, and my deadline is any time before this baby is born! Be on the look out, I've already started working at home and while it's slow going right now, I am determined.

Wish me luck!

a giveaway!

Time has flown by so fast lately... and as my husband pointed out, this blog has been just a teensy bit ignored. Well what can I say, life happens! I still have about a zillion projects around the house but I have no free time anymore. I'm no longer unemployed (thank goodness!) so I work all day, and I bake all night for Killer Zebras Bakery that I mentioned in my last post! Killer Zebras is still only in it's infancy, but I've got lots of exciting things coming up! If I ever find a good balance that allows me to get back to doing projects, I'll most certainly start posting again here... but for regular updates head on over to Killer Zebras, especially over the next few days as I'm hosting a great giveaway! For those of you who haven't checked it out yet, here is a little of what I've been up to:

I've been a busy girl, even if I've been completely missing around here for a while. Don't miss my giveaway, and thanks for being such great readers!

killer zebras - at last!

I've been pretty much MIA lately... some of that is just life (and a 2 year old!), but some of that is because I've been starting up a new blog! Bowl of Oranges has been fun, and I'm going to keep it up... but it was only ever a just for fun thing and often times I just don't get around to updating it. I'll still update when I get projects done, but if you'd like to see what I've been hard at work getting started, check out my new blog:

I mentioned in my last post that I have been thinking about selling cookies and so I decided to get things started! Killer Zebras is all about cookies, and just cooking in general! You can expect regular updates over there, so come check it out!

valentine cookies

Matthew helped me make Valentine cookies this year...

...and by helped, I mean he didn't try to steal too many while I baked and decorated!

I've decided I want to open up an online store that sells cookies (and perhaps some other goodies down the line a bit). I've got plans in the works (so hopefully it won't be to long before I  can announce it here!) but I'm really stuck in one area: a name. I am really horrible at naming things! I want something cute and memorable, but there are so many bakeries out there that it also needs to be unique!

A little help, please?

If you come up with a good name - and I use it - I can promise you a dozen free cookies!

In the meantime, have a sweet Valentine's Day!
